In 18 days I will be turning 42. As it was said so well by Martin Luther King ” I have a dream!” I have a dream to make the world a better place and I need your help. I have a simple goal for my 42nd birthday – raise enough money to GIVE 20 school girls in Zimbabwe a pair of shoes.
Day 147: Give 147
I have just recently begun to get the hang of Twitter and Facebook. I came across a great feature on Facebook I thought we could all use called Causes. It gives you a platform to raise funds for a cause you believe in. Everyone on Facebook can do this for their birthday (or any other day). Since I have been in the fundraising field for over 15 years I get asked on a regular basis how you get donations from people. I have two answers for them.
1) Ask someone you know.
It is much easier to ask for money when you have a connection or relationship with a potential donor. Cold calls are very hard to make and very hard to materialize funds from, without a huge platform and benifits.
2) Believe in your Cause
If you believe in your cause, other people will as well. I believe GIVING can be contagious and if you can convey your passion and belief to another person you are more likely to get a donation. Everyone likes to feel inspired so inspire others to GIVE.
So here goes my request:
To all of you that have follow 365give, to my friends and my family. I need your help. I believe if all women are educated around the world it will create great change. I beleive if we give them every possible chance to succeed they will exceed what we ever believed they could do. When women are educated they teach their children, they bring their education to their village and their expertise home where it is most needed.
These are 3 great facts on the effects of educating women in Africa:
1) Three Times less likely to get HIV / AIDS
2) Earn 25% more income
3) Have smaller healthier families
So for my birthday this year I want to GIVE school girls a fighting chance and get them to school on time. I couldn’t imagine not having a pair shoes. Not only do I own one, but many pairs of shoes. I’m not your typical “shoe hound” like many women – or my husband (lol) – but every girl needs a pair of shoes. It saves them from disease and sickness and at the end of the day is more comfortable for the long walks to school many of them have to do every day.
This cause – Shoes for School Girls – is supported through Camfed. Here is a quote from their mission:
“In many rural communities in Zimbabwe, girls don’t have shoes to wear to high school. They walk long distances to school barefoot, over rocky uneven surfaces. Mercy, a local volunteer says, “It tears my heart to think these children’s feet are not protected.”
They still go to school and walk many miles to get there. Together we can help these girls. Together we can make a difference on the other side of the world.
So please donate. Whether it’s $25.00 or $5.00 we can do this. I have donated one pair of shoes $25.00 to get the ball rolling and now I need your help to reach my goal of 20 pairs of shoes. Your support and donations would be very appreciated. Even a retweet or Facebook “like” will help by paying it forward!
Time Commitment: 5 minutes to set up my Cause page
Cost: $25.00 donation = 1 new pair of shoes
